New Zealand's copyright industries are a vital part of the country's economy and copyright theft threatens this vital industry.

New Zealanders are also avid movie-goers, attending the cinema approximately four times a year on average. The film industry's estimated loss to piracy of $70 million in 2017 represents nearly half of the national box office in that year and an estimated 25% of the legitimate market overall. This includes the illegal downloading and distribution of films.

That loss affects not just big production and distribution companies but also independent film and television producers and cinema owners, DVD rental and retail stores, small franchise businesses, and all the people they employ.

Copyright thieves hurt all New Zealanders since they don't pay tax on the illegal copies they distribute or sell, thus not contributing to the welfare of all New Zealanders.
