Entertainment Industry
Not only do movie pirates damage the revenue and prosperity of the global and local creative communities, but also they hurt - by costing them wages and jobs - the many millions of people who work to distribute movies in theaters and video shops and theatres all around the world.
NZFACT is working to help people understand the importance of intellectual property and the importance of respecting copyright.
We are working to help them understand that if they take movies for free off the Internet, or for next to nothing from a pirate street vendor, they will kill the thing they love. They will kill the movie business.
And they will kill first of all the local movie business. The local movie producer or budding filmmaker who wants to realize his or her dream will find it increasingly difficult to get investment without a stable domestic sales platform.
New Zealand films grossed around $147 million at the box office in 2017 - if 50% of that is being lost to movie thieves (through pirate DVDs), then our film industry faces a steep struggle to continue achieve all the gains it has made in the past decade.
The kid who dreams of working in the movie business as a cinematographer or sound person or set builder won't be able to get a job, because there will be far fewer local movies being made and having that skilled work pool is critical to New Zealand attracting offshore production, a major component of the local film industry's health.
Of the thousands of New Zealanders who work in the film and television industries, they and their families are the first victims of this "victimless" crime. |
